MailChimp is a great email marketing platform for those just starting an email list. But unfortunately, using MailChimp’s embed form and popup leaves a lot to be desired. While those features are great in a pinch, they don’t integrate that nicely. Unless you are great with CSS, then the embed form is going to stick out like a sore thumb on your website. And the popup? Sometimes it just doesn’t work, mostly due to plugin or theme conflicts.
However, those shortcomings shouldn’t stop you from taking advantage of all that MailChimp has to offer. The good news is that since MailChimp is one of the top email marketing platforms, there are a ton of plugins available that allow you to seamlessly integrate MailChimp with WordPress. Below is a look at 6 WordPress plugins that will allow you to create beautiful opt-ins and popups and connect them with MailChimp.
MailChimp for WordPress
One of the easiest to use plugins for integrating MailChimp with WordPress is the MailChimp for WordPress plugin. This plugin makes it ridiculously easy to add opt-in forms across your site.
Simply install the plugin and connect it with your WordPress account. Then you can create a form and use the provided shortcode anywhere on your site, including inside posts and pages. There’s even a handy widget that makes adding forms to your sidebar and footer a breeze.
What’s great about this plugin is that it inherits the form styling from your theme so any opt-ins you add will blend seamlessly with the rest of your site. There are also a few other designs that you can choose for your opt-in form if you’re not particularly keen on the way the forms are styled in your theme.
Pro tip: Pair the MailChimp for WordPress plugin with Popup Maker to easily create custom popups on the fly.
Popups can be annoying for your audience, but they don’t have to be. PopupAlly is a great free plugin that allows you to add a popup that displays upon exit. This means that your popup won’t appear until your site’s visitors are already leaving, thus avoiding interrupting people while they’re actively using your site. But if you’d rather display a popup that’s time-based, it can do that too! You can also select what pages your opt-in appears on, which is perfect when you have a popup that should only appear on one page.
PopupAlly offers a bunch of customization options so you can get your popup looking exactly how you want it to. As a designer, I think it’s one of the best in terms of creating a seamless popup. Of course, since it is a free plugin you are a bit limited in terms of features, but I’ve honestly never ran into any issues on the free version. Of course, if you want more features you can always upgrade to the pro version which gives you additional functionality.
Connecting your MailChimp account with PopupAlly is a breeze. Just copy and paste the embed code provided by MailChimp into the settings for your popup and that’s it. Then just customize the display settings and the look of your popup and you’re in business!
Bloom is my go-to opt-in form plugin for my personal sites (including this one). It is a premium plugin, but it’s totally worth it. The plugin has all of the opt-in forms you could possibly need. Inline forms, popups, slide-ins, widgets, below posts, and more. And that’s just scratching the surface! You can trigger your popups and slide-ins to appear upon scroll percentage, time, or even after commenting. Throw in some A/B testing and analytics and this plugin gives you tons of control over growing your email list.
Plus, the forms are gorgeous right out of the box. There are a bunch of premade form styles to choose from, or you can customize the different elements of the form to your liking. They make it easy for your forms to seamlessly blend in with your theme.
Bloom connects with many of the top email marketing platforms, including MailChimp. Connecting the two is as easy as copying and pasting your MailChimp API key into Bloom’s settings. That’s it.
Sumo is a feature packed plugin that has tons of great tools, including a few that can help you grow your email list. There’s list builder that offers popups that appear after a set amount of time, after clicked, or when page is scrolled. There’s also the welcome mat feature which is a full page opt-in form that loads on top of your website when someone lands on it. And then there’s the smart bar which is a bar that can be added to the top or bottom of your site to collect email addresses. Sumo offers all of these options for free, but there are some functionality limits. Of course you can upgrade any of these tools to get access to the full versions of each.
Integrating MailChimp with any of these Sumo tools involves signing in to your MailChimp account via Sumo’s integration page. Once you do that and enable the connection, those tools will have access to your MailChimp account.
Easy Forms for MailChimp
Easy Forms for MailChimp is exactly that: easy. If you’re looking for a no frills way to add an opt-in form to your site, this plugin is the way to go. Like MailChimp for WordPress, Easy Forms for MailChimp inherits your theme’s style so your forms blend seamlessly with your site. Again, this is a pretty bare bones plugin, one that’s actually pretty similar to MailChimp for WordPress. But if you’re looking for something simple, this plugin is perfect.
Like some of the plugins listed above, connecting MailChimp just involves copying and pasting an API key. Super easy.
MailMunch is a plugin that is similar to Bloom in that it offers a bunch of different options for your forms, including popups, top bar form, embedded forms, and even landing pages. In order to use this plugin, you’ll need to sign up for a MailMunch account, which they offer for free.
Each of the forms they offer can be customized on the free plan, but some features are locked unless you upgrade to a paid plan. If you’re just getting started or are on a budget, the free plan offers enough functionality. But if you’re looking for fancier features or want to remove their branding from your forms, the upgrading is the way to go.
Since MailMunch is a stand alone service, setting up your forms is a bit different than the rest of the plugins on this list. The WordPress plugin allows you to create new forms, but then it takes you to the MailMunch site where all the customization happens. The plugin essentially just serves as the connection between your MailMunch account and your WordPress site.
MailChimp is a great free email marketing platform and there are a ton of ways to integrate your MailChimp account with your WordPress site. Above are only 6 plugins that allow you to connect the two, but there are many more. When choosing a plugin to use, think about your needs: what types of forms do you need? What customization options do you want? What’s your budget. Then choose a plugin that best matches what you’re looking for. I would advise against using multiple MailChimp plugins and instead look for one that meets all of your needs. That helps keep your website running smoother and also makes maintaining your forms a lot easier.
